We all hit a wall and become bored at work. Remember your first day on the job? You were excited, ambitious, eager to work your ass off and show them why hiring you was the best decision they could’ve made. You wore your best outfits to make a great impression, and you attended all meetings ready to take notes and add value.
But now? Now you’re dreading work each day. It seems like the Sunday scaries happen EVERY day. You grab whatever clothes are clean and wrinkle free (or a basic shirt and pajama pants if you’re virtual) because it doesn’t matter as much to you anymore. You’re now at a place where you just show up to do the bare minimum, get your paycheck, and slam your laptop shut for the day.
How did this happen? How did you get here?! My guess is that somewhere in between you stopped doing work that was challenging, and you tried different ways to improve your environment but hit a dead end with each attempt. As a result, you lost interest in your work which led to the downward spiral of happiness at work.
Gallup’s latest study of the global workplace showed that the majority of employees are unhappy.
In the U.S. specifically, 50% of workers reported feeling stressed at their jobs on a daily basis. Of those employees, 41% stated worry, 22% stated sadness, and 18% stated anger as the cause for their stress.
The running joke in the corporate world is that everyone hates their job. There’s funny memes, gifs, Reels, and TikToks that showcase this, and we share them with our friends as we laugh and cry all at the same time. Why? Because it’s relatable! We’ve all been there before, and many are there now. While I understand that no one really wants to work, but would instead choose to live life on beaches, mountains, and desert islands if we could…that doesn’t mean that you have to dread going to work each and every day.
One third of our lives are spent at work, so we might as well be spending it doing things that interest, challenge, and excite us.
The problem is that because of this implied norm, we can fall into the trap of just accepting it as our new reality. Deciding to suck it up, push forward, put our heads down and just do the work. But we’re worth more than that aren’t we? We deserve better - we deserve happiness, fulfillment, and achievement.
If you’re feeling bored, unchallenged, and stuck in your career, then I want to share with you 3 ways to get unstuck. Oh, and I’ve included some empowering reminders to leave you feeling ready to get back to the inspired woman that you used to be 😉
